Obesity on the rise

Warning issued that primary school children are facing an obesity timebomb as public health funding in North East is slashed.

A pupil weighing more than 15st was measured at a primary school in Newcastle - ranking as the heaviest 10-year-old in the North East. According to alarming new statistics, 25 primary school children in the region have a BMI of 35 or more, potentially making them morbidly obese.

The figures have prompted concerns that a child obesity timebomb is set to explode at the same time the North East is facing massive cuts in public health spending.
