During the darker winter months you will probably find your kids will do far less exercise than they should. This is when you as parents need to push yourselves that extra bit to help them.
Remember exercise isn't just about keeping your child's weight under control, it is also vitally important for the development of strong bones and muscles, improving the immune system and reducing the chances of developing other health issues such as diabetes.
Here are a few tips to keep them moving and raise their heart rates:
Fun in the Garden - just because it's cold it is not an excuse to avoid having fun in the garden. Games such as piggy in the middle or tag are perfect to keep you all moving and your whole body working. Let your child do some digging or help you do the garden. Exercise doesn't necessarily have to be structured, it's surprising how much exercise you actually get when you're having fun!
Family and Friends - rather than inviting friends or other members of the family round to watch a DVD (which usually involves eating) do something that requires movement such as: ice skating, bowling, swimming, walking or going to a children's indoor or outdoor play area.
Structured Sessions - of course there are more structured fitness sessions for kids at most leisure centres, so check out your local centre for details.
Swimming - when in the swimming pool make up little games, such as how hard and long they can kick their legs, arms etc. It will not take long to tire them out and give them a good workout.
At home - being at home seems to be associated with sweets and Disney. For a change let your children exercise with their favourite TV characters, most of which have their own sing and dance along DVDs. Also try feeding them natural, fresh, health food rather than sweets, you will be amazed how calm they can be when they are not full of sugar!
